Dr. Jana Rieger receives 2024 Woman in Tech

2024 Woman in Tech

On November 20, 2024, Dr. Jana Rieger of True Angle was recognized with the Woman in Tech Award as part of the 2024 Start Alberta Tech Awards. The Woman in Tech is awarded to a forward-thinking woman recognized for her entrepreneurial success and ability to launch a venture-backable technology-focused company in Alberta. This individual has also demonstrated a passion for supporting gender equity and promoting women’s advancement, making a lasting impact on Alberta’s technology ecosystem.

Dr. Rieger is the Co-Founder and CEO of True Angle, a MedTech company that develops innovative wearable solutions to enhance health and wellness through biofeedback technology.

“We all know that there’s certain physical activities we should do, but sometimes it’s just really hard to stick to them. So we create products that make that easy for people, that connect them to their body and that keep you on track,” explains Dr. Rieger. “Our goal is to empower people to take charge of their own health as much as possible, in a way that’s as convenient as possible with home-based wearable technologies.”

True Angle’s first product, Mobili-T, empowers people with swallowing disorders to confidently complete their therapy remotely. Together with alumni of the Creative Destruction Lab-Rockies, Jana and her team have overseen the implementation of True Angle’s Mobili-T device at more than 50 US clinics including Stanford University, UCLA and the Mayo Clinic. True Angle plans to expand its reach, with ongoing exploration through UCalgary’s Department of Clinical Neuroscience to adapt their product for stroke patients.

Drawing on Dr. Reiger’s PhD work in respiratory kinematics, True Angle’s latest product Breth is a wearable device that combines haptic technology and smart sensors to personalize breathwork sessions. While Mobili-T focuses on specialized medical therapy, Breth expands True Angle’s reach into broader wellness applications, offering guided exercises that support anxiety management, respiratory health, enhanced focus, and emotional well-being.

Over the years, Dr. Reiger has seen Alberta’s MedTech sector emerge and flourish: “I would tell the rest of the world that Alberta has incredible strengths in areas like artificial intelligence, biotech, health tech, quantum computing, and that all these things are coming together to really create a vibrant and innovative tech hub for people.”
